Stop the censorship, flickr! There must be a way found to allow members to freely view whatever they wish on flickr. To allow the viewing of "safe" images only is to treat members as children and it is not good enough to say that it is because of their laws of restriction. As I get the jist through the various anti-censorship forums, yahoo does not want to risk being in trouble with usage in countries and cities like Germany, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. I hear lame excuses like "because flickr does not have a method of verifying ages of members". Therefore all adults must suffer censorship? Shame to all who do not work together to resolve the issues. This has gone on days and days now since the new "localization" feature of flickr was announced. There is NO JOY in Mudville, folks!

W. W. Graham, owner and proprietor of the Glendale Stock Farm, in Oxford township, is a veteran of the Civil war and a Kansas pioneer, who has contributed his part to making Johnson county one of the best counties of the State. Mr. Graham is a native of Highland county, Ohio, and was born in 1840. His parents were John and Katherine (Fenner) Graham, both natives of Pennsylvania, the father of Irish and the mother of German descent. John Graham is a son of John Graham, who came from Pennsylvania to Highland county, Ohio, in 1815, and settled near Hillsboro, the county seat, where he spent the balance of his life, John Graham, the father of W. W. Graham, also spent his life in Highland county. He was a Democrat in early life but was a strong anti-slavery man and at the organization of the Republican party he became a Republican. W. W. Graham was reared to manhood on the home farm in Highland county, Ohio, and during his boyhood was greatly interested in the question of slavery which was the great national controversy at that time. He had developed a strong anti-slavery sentiment, and in 1862, enlisted in Company A, Eighty-ninth regiment, Ohio infantry. During the three years and four months that followed he saw much service and endured the many hardships incident to the life of a soldier in camp, on the march and on the field of battle. He was at the battle of Chickamauga where one-half of his regiment was captured. He participated in the battles of Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Jonesboro, and while on special guard duty was captured and for four months was confined in Confederate prisons but was finally exchanged at Black River, near Vicksburg, Miss., and was mustered out of service in August 1865. He suffered much while in the service from a wound in the foot which became infected and gangrene set in, which almost totally disabled him for a year after the war. He learned the shoemaker’s trade and in 1867, went to Peoria county, Illinois, where he worked by the month for a time and returned to Ohio in the spring of 1868, and married Miss Emma Steward, a daughter of Robert and Diantha (McGee) Steward, both natives of Ohio. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. Graham and his wife started west with Neosho county, Kansas, as their intended destination, but when they reached Kansas City they learned of Indian depredations in that section of the State, and came to Johnson county instead. Here Mr. Graham bought a farm from Charles Tucker, a full-blood Shawnee Indian. There were many Indians here then and Mr. Graham became well acquainted and was very friendly with Bluejacket, the Shawnee chief. The farm which Mr. Graham purchased was unimproved and in a raw, unbroken state. He improved the place and brought it under a high state of cultivation and today the “Glendale Stock Farm” is one of the best equipped ranches in Johnson county. Mr. Graham has carried on general farming and stock raising and made money. He is one of the prosperious and progressive farmers of the county. To Mr. and Mrs. Graham have been born five children, as follows; John S. resides on the home farm; Mary Ella, Clara, Isabelle, Eva and Ollie. Mr. Graham is a stockholder in the Patrons Bank of Olathe. He is a member of the Church of God and is a Democrat. In the Populist days Mr. Graham took an active interest in that party and is still a believer in the principles set forth by that party.

While providing escort for a North Sea convoy on 16th October 1939, a German Ju88 aircraft attacked MOHAWK. Before the dive-bomber was destroyed, it released two bombs, which fell to starboard (abreast of the bridge) and to port (abreast of the torpedo tubes). The bombs exploded on the surface of the sea well before most men had time to reach their action stations. Machine gun bullets and jagged metal splinters decimated the mooring party on the fo’c'sle, slashed through the bridge, the wheelhouse, the director and the communications system. The personnel manning the machineguns, the search light position and after control position were mowed down by the projectiles. Fifteen men were killed and thirty injured, mostly experienced executive officers. On the bridge, Commander Jolly suffered a mortal stomach wound. While denying the comfort of medical attention, and in great pain and suffering, he commanded his ship for 35 miles until she was safely in port. After being taken to hospital at South Queensferry, England, he died several hours later. For his gallantry, the Captain was awarded the George Cross posthumously

While providing escort for a North Sea convoy on 16th October 1939, a German Ju88 aircraft attacked MOHAWK. Before the dive-bomber was destroyed, it released two bombs, which fell to starboard (abreast of the bridge) and to port (abreast of the torpedo tubes). The bombs exploded on the surface of the sea well before most men had time to reach their action stations. Machine gun bullets and jagged metal splinters decimated the mooring party on the fo’c'sle, slashed through the bridge, the wheelhouse, the director and the communications system. The personnel manning the machineguns, the search light position and after control position were mowed down by the projectiles. Fifteen men were killed and thirty injured, mostly experienced executive officers. On the bridge, Commander Jolly suffered a mortal stomach wound. While denying the comfort of medical attention, and in great pain and suffering, he commanded his ship for 35 miles until she was safely in port. After being taken to hospital at South Queensferry, England, he died several hours later. For his gallantry, the Captain was awarded the George Cross posthumously

Bike Locker

I’ve finally got a bike locker at work. They were installed in November, it took ages before anyone told me how I could get one, my sixty quid deposit cheque was cashed in December, but it’s taken until the end of January to get access to it! I don’t think anyone else has one yet.

The bike is held up by a metal loop round the front wheel. It’s a bit tricky to use, but I guess I’ll get used to it. Being able to store bags, lights etc with the bike instead of carrying them to my office will be a big advantage.

The reflective jacket is a free gift from my employers. Perhaps they’ll swap it for a decent jersey.

Unfortunately it stinks around the lockers, because that’s where the smokers hang out.

Le Haut-Kœnigsbourg est un château médiéval se situant dans la commune française d’Orschwiller dans le département du Bas-Rhin en Alsace.
Le nom actuel du château, Haut-Kœnigsbourg, est le résultat de l’adaptation du nom allemand Hohkönigsburg qui se traduit par « haut-château du roi ».

Depuis 1871 et le traité de Francfort, l’Alsace est devenue allemande. Le 4 mai 1899, le château, alors en ruine, et les terres l’entourant sont offerts par la ville de Sélestat à l’empereur allemand Guillaume II qui souhaite y créer une sorte d’éco-musée vantant les qualités de la période médiévale de l’Alsace et, plus généralement, du monde germanique. La municipalité se garde la centaine d’hectares de forêt, économiquement rentables.
La direction de la restauration de ce château fort est confiée en 1900 à Bodo Ebhardt, architecte et archéologue berlinois âgé de 34 ans. Il commence par le déblaiement du site et les relevés des anciennes constructions. La restauration s’étalera de 1901 à 1908. L’objectif de Bodo Ebhardt est de le restaurer tel qu’il se présentait à la veille de la guerre de Trente Ans mais, manquant de sources, il doit improviser sur de nombreuses parties du château, accentuant même dès que possible les éléments les plus pittoresques et répondant au goût du Kaiser, s’éloignant ainsi de la fidélité historique de la reconstitution.
Le nouvel édifice du Haut-Kœnigsbourg est inauguré le 13 mai 1908. À l’issue de la Première Guerre mondiale, les biens de l’empereur, dont le château, sont récupérés par l’État français.

En 1936, il fut l’un des nombreux lieux de tournage pour le film La Grande Illusion de Jean Renoir.

Apparently it’s “be surrounded by idiots” day. If I had known, I never would have left the house. Unfortunately, my internet has been wonky, so I headed to Uptown to take advantage of the free wifi (and yummy bubble tea) at the Tea Garden. So I hopped on a #6.

Before I continue, it is important to note that the Pride Festival’s happening right now, and there are a number of related activities going on today, centered around the Loring Park area. The #6 heads straight through this area. The bus was full, with at least half of the passengers obviously headed to Pride-related activities.

And then this moron sitting behind me starts in on an anti-gay rant. Standard stuff – gays are sinners, blah, blah, blah. After a while of being able to hear this over my headphones, I turn around and tell him to keep his opinions to himself. His response? “Are you gay?” Because, clearly, only someone who is gay would be offended by a hate-filled bigot running his mouth off on the bus. I told him it was none of his business. Being the gentleman that he was, he called me a number of obscene names, told me to keep my mouth shut, etc. I turned around, rummaged in my bag, and pulled out my camera. He hid behind the board in front of his seat. An old guy, with a cane, hiding from my camera. It was highly amusing.

Among the things I should have told him, but didn’t:

Do you honestly think someone needs to be gay to be offended by your bigotry?

If you want to be a bigoted moron in private, that’s you’re problem, but you need to learn how to act on a public bus. [Possible addition(s): Didn’t your mother teach you how to act in public? and/or At your age, I would expect you to know how to act in public.]

How would you react if someone sitting behind you on the bus was ranting about how being black is a sin?

Many modern antiheroes possess, or even encapsulate, the postmodern rejection of traditional values symptomatic of Modernist literature in general, as well as the disillusion felt after World War II and the Nuclear Age. The continuing popularity of the antihero in modern literature and popular culture may be based on the recognition that a person is fraught with human frailties, unlike the archetypes of the white-hatted cowboy and the noble warrior, and is therefore more accessible to readers and viewers. This popularity may also be symptomatic of the rejection by the avant-garde of traditional values after the counter-culture revolution of the 1960s.
In the postmodern era, traditionally defined heroic qualities, akin to the classic "knight in shining armor" type, have given way to the "gritty truth" of life, and authority in general is being questioned. The brooding vigilante or "noble criminal" archetype, seen in characters like Batman, is slowly becoming part of the popular conception of heroic valor rather than being characteristics that are deemed un-heroic.

The Dumbest Generation

It took nearly 8 weeks for me to get this book from the library because there were so many holds on it. As I was checking it out, there was a girl about 13 waiting to check out a 3 foot stack of young adult fiction. In these high rent areas of Silicon Valley parents are clearly concerned about the impact of computers on their kids. These are not the kids this book is talking about.

This author goes to great pains to list and explain the validity of his research and data to prove that despite so many writers raving about the digital generation being smarter in more innovative, search savvy ways than before, the national stats, the comments of college professors and employee recruiters indicate that young people are sorely lacking in basic intellectual skills.

In the hands of teens, the computer is clearly not the learning tool phenomena that had writers so enthralled. Just because information was at their fingertips didn’t mean they were using it. For teens the computer is a cross between television and a telephone used mainly to select teen appeal content and chatter endlessly with friends. Surprise surprise, the computer age just made it that much easier to insulate themselves from the adult world. But are these skills transferable or worthwhile?

A website marketing firm that actually tracked eye movement of people wired to computers and recorded stream of consciousness verbalizing as they interacted with websites showed that people don’t read at the screen, they skim and look for what turns them on. They want websites to look the same so they can interact with a familiar interface and they resist long blocks of text. So computers are actually helping people to dumb down and not excercise intellectual skills at all. This phenomena has been noted in Atlantic Monthly article Is Google Making Us Stupid?

The rest of the book is no longer about the digital age, but about youth culture since it became the phenomena extraordinaire of the 60′s and turned this nation into the youth worshipping culture that it is. Those who should be mentoring students by raising the bar, he contends, have bought into the youth phenomena and now promote adolescent insularity, unhampered by the burden of history. This was actually quite a helpful perspective because my experience with teens has caused me to be intimidated by teen culture. The mother (my then lover) of teens told me it was our duty as elders to step aside and let them lead. I was, at the time, appalled by this sentiment, but had no rebuttal.

He finishes the book by covering all the usual arguments about why a democracy needs knowledgeable civic minded citizens and that just isn’t happening. None of these arguments are convincing mostly because he blames the participants and doesn’t mention the encroaching fascism of a material world egged on by corporate controlled capitalism. His description of young people today describes my own anti-civic, anti-intellectual, self-involved youth (inspired by the obvious hypocrisy of adult life). Reviewers have panned him for so broadly criticizing any generation still in these formative years.

This English professor author is simply arguing for the old culture of intellectual rigor as it was prescribed in his day when books were king and intellectuals had longer arguments. And I agree a book has a lot more scope to grasp the big picture. And while he notes the flat style of Wickipedia he doesn’t pinpoint my pet peeve of the internet which is that deadline driven writers are using it to research any given topic with the result that one or two pithy facts from fewer and fewer on-the-ground content providers are being circulated repeatedly until it becomes the truth for that topic. And because the internet is supposed to be the vast ocean of all known knowledge they don’t realize that they are bumping their head on the shallow bottom of it constantly.

He does mention, as a good sign, that young people are a lot better behaved than their sexually wild, drug using predecessors were which makes me wonder if this is simply a sign of increased fear and materialism in our youth, but he does not make any observations about how the monocropping of youth culture has created a more conservative, easily controlled populace. Except for one mention of teens missing out on a soldering iron, he does not mention the core of this whole argument which is my pet theory that teens are not getting out and actually experiencing life or learning hands-on skills. They don’t negotiate or manage for themselves their own free time, coming up with activities and getting to and from events because now it’s all so much protective play dating. The hands on skills were eroding in my generation. Those outdoor experiences and hand skills were given up in favor of grooming coal miners for the Information Age which might well be the logical progression of book reading. Given how difficult it is to publish anything that does not guarantee a large buying public or is controversial in a paradigm busting way, I think there may be more at fault here than just the digital age.

Cobh (Pronounced "cove") is a sheltered seaport town on the south coast of County Cork, Ireland.

The locality, which had had several different Irish-language names, was first referred to as Cove ("The Cove of Cork") in 1750. It was renamed Queenstown in 1849 to commemorate a visit by Queen Victoria and so remained until the name Cobh (closer to the Irish spelling) was restored in 1922 with the foundation of the Irish Free State.

Cobh is located on the south shore of the Great Island in Cork Harbour, (reputed to be the second largest natural harbour in the world), on south-facing slopes overlooking the entrance to the harbour. Facing the town of Cobh are Spike Island and Haulbowline Island. On a high point in the town stands the Cobh Cathedral, St. Colman’s, seat of the diocese of Cloyne.

According to legend, one of the first colonists of Ireland was Neimheidh, who landed in Cork Harbour over 1000 years BC[citation needed] He and his followers were said to have been wiped out in a plague, but the Great Island was known in Irish as Oilean Ard Neimheadh because of its association with him. Later it became known as Crich Liathain because of the Lehane tribe who were rulers of it[citation needed]. The island subsequently became known as Oilean Mor An Barra, (the Great Island of Barry & Barrymore) after the Barry family who inherited it.

The village on the island was known as Ballyvoloon, overlooking "The Cove" and this was first referred to as Cove village in 1750 by Smith the historian who said "it was inhabited by seamen and revenue officials". The Cork directory of 1787 shows about thirty businesses in the town including one butcher and one draper. The Water Club established at Haulbowline in 1720 was the progenitor of the present Royal Cork Yacht Club (now based in Crosshaven) and is the oldest yacht club in the world. The Royal Cork Yacht Club (RCYC) was based for many years in Cobh and the present Sirius Arts Centre was formerly a clubhouse of the RCYC organisation. In 1966 the Royal Cork Yacht Club merged with the Royal Munster Yacht Club, retaining the name of the RCYC but moving its headquarters to those of the RMYC at Crosshaven at the other side of the harbour.

Cobh is well served by pubs and hostelries. The oldest recorded pub on the island is reputed to have been the "Anti Gallicon" situated in the Holy Ground, and apparently liable to flooding when the tide came in. This pub dated back to the 1780s and was named after opponents to the French "Gallicon" faction who opposed the powers of the Pope
Cove underwent rapid development in the early 1800s assisted by world events. Due to its naturally protected harbour Cobh has historically been important as a tactical base for naval military bases. For instance, Cobh was of major tactical military importance as a naval base during the Napoleonic wars between France and England. Today, the Irish Naval Service is based on Haulbowline island facing Cobh.

The Napoleonic Wars meant the town became a British Naval port with its own admiral and much of the present day buildings were built. The cessation of hostilities dented its prosperity for a time but it became widely known as a health resort and many convalescents came to Cove to avail of its temperate climate. Amongst these was Rev. Charles Wolfe who wrote the "Burial of Sir John Moore at Corunna" and is buried in the Old Church Cemetery outside the town.

One of the major transatlantic Irish ports, Cobh was the departure point for 2.5 million of the six million Irish people who emigrated to North America between 1848 and 1950. On 11 April 1912 Queenstown was the final port of call for the RMS Titanic as she set out across the Atlantic on her ill-fated maiden voyage. Local lore has it that a Titanic crew member John Coffey, a native of Queenstown, jumped ship although there is no record of him on the crew list. 123 passengers boarded in all; only 44 survived the sinking.
Cobh was also a major disembarkation port for men, women and children who were deported to penal colonies such as Australia. The records of such deportations can be found in the ship log books in the Cobh Museum, which since 1973 is housed in Scots church (Presbyterian church until 1969 closure) overlooking the harbour.

Due to its maritime advantages, a significant shipbuilding industry developed in Cobh and the remnants of the Verolme Shipyard today maintain many of the original cranes and hoists which now form part of the significant industrial and maritime heritage of Cobh which is considered to have major tourism potential. Underutilised dockyards in Holland (e.g. NDSM/Stichting Kinetisch Noord in Amsterdam which has been redeveloped as an artistic and cultural centre and where MTV has since located) and other European countries are now emerging as major hubs of cultural and economic development, focussing on fostering creative class and knowledge-intensive industries such as media and computing. [1]. The Verolme Shipyard currently contains the Philip Gray Gallery of Fine Art [2].

The original pier (as it appeared in 2007) that passengers used to board ferries to get to the Titanic—which was anchored near the mouth of Cobh harbour.
The age of steam brought famous achievements to Cobh, most notably the first steam ship to sail from Ireland to England (1821) and the first steam ship to cross the Atlantic (Sirius 1838) which left from Passage West. In 1849 the name of the town was changed to Queenstown to honour Queen Victoria who visited Ireland in that year.
Several other notable ships are associated with the town, including the Cunard passenger liner RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German U-Boat off the Old Head of Kinsale while en route to Liverpool in on May 7, 1915. 1198 passengers died, while 700 were rescued. The survivors and victims were brought to the town of Cobh, and over one hundred lie buried in the Old Church Cemetery just north of the town. The Lusitania Peace memorial is located in Casement Square opposite the arched building housing the Cobh Library and Courthouse.

During World War I, Queenstown was a naval base for British and American destroyers operating against U-boats that preyed upon allied merchant vessels. The first division of American destroyers arrived in May 1917, and the sailors who served on those vessels were the first American servicemen in combat duty in the war. When the convoy arrived in port, after a rough passage in what were little more than open boats, they were met with a great crowd of sailors and townspeople, thankful for their help in stopping the U-boats that were blockading western Europe. The British Commodore met the captain of the American flagship by jumping onto the dock, and asked him how soon the weather-beaten American ships could be put to use. "We’re ready now, sir!" was the widely quoted answer from the Captain.

Due to its tactical military importance, under the terms of the Anglo-Irish Treaty 1921 the port remained a UK sovereign base, see Treaty Port. Along with the other Treaty ports it was handed over to the government of the Irish Free State in 1938.

The population of the Cobh area has increased greatly in recent times with large new housing estates established on the outskirts of the town, placing severe pressures on the transport infrastructure. The town boundary has not yet reflected these changes in order to accommodate the new housing developments.

According to the 2006 Census, the combined population of Cobh and Great Island was 12,887. The former farmlands of Cobh have been extensively developed in recent years, with a large amount of housing estates being built in areas such as Rushbrooke and Carrignafoy. Cobh is gradually becoming a satellite town to the nearby Cork City, and has a dynamic (and international) commuter population as can be evidenced on the hourly commuter train service to Cork city.

Haulbowline Island which faces Cobh town is the headquarters of the Irish Naval Service, formerly a British naval station.

Cobh was home to Ireland’s only steelworks, the former state-owned Irish Steel works which was closed by its buyer, Ispat International, in 2001. There is a controversy over the slag heap on the steelworks, where there are concerns that it may be leaching into the harbour[3].

Tourism is a large employer in Cobh. Large cruise liners visit Cobh each year, mainly during the summer months, although many of the tourists are transported out of Cobh by bus to other tourist destinations.

Another important employer in Cobh had been the Dutch-owned Verolme Cork Dockyard, in Rushbrooke. It opened in 1960 and ceased operations in the mid-1980s. In 1981 the mvLeinster was built at Verolme for service on the Dublin – Holyhead route [4] The last ship built at Verolme was the Irish Naval Service’s LÉ Eithne (P31) [5]. Some ship repair work is still carried at Rushbrooke using the impressive drydock[1] and other facilities. The drydock pumps are reputed to date from 1912.

Karl Theodor Jaspers (February 23, 1883 – February 26, 1969)
… was a German psychiatrist and philosopher who had a strong influence on modern theology, psychiatry and philosophy. After being trained in and practicing psychiatry, Jaspers turned to philosophical inquiry and attempted to discover an innovative philosophical system. He was often viewed as a major exponent of existentialism in Germany, though he did not accept this label.
Jaspers was born in Oldenburg in 1883 to a mother from a local farming community, and a jurist father. He showed an early interest in philosophy, but his father’s experience with the legal system undoubtedly influenced his decision to study law at university. It soon became clear that Jaspers did not particularly enjoy law, and he switched to studying medicine in 1902 with a thesis about criminology.
Jaspers graduated from medical school in 1909 and began work at a psychiatric hospital in Heidelberg where Emil Kraepelin had worked some years earlier. Jaspers became dissatisfied with the way the medical community of the time approached the study of mental illness and set himself the task of improving the psychiatric approach. In 1913 Jaspers gained a temporary post as a psychology teacher at Heidelberg University. The post later became permanent, and Jaspers never returned to clinical practice. During this time Jaspers was a close friend of the Weber family (Max Weber also having held a professorship at Heidelberg).
At the age of 40 Jaspers turned from psychology to philosophy, expanding on themes he had developed in his psychiatric works. He became a renowned philosopher, well respected in Germany and Europe.
After the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, Jaspers was considered to have a "Jewish taint" (jüdische Versippung, in the jargon of the time) due to his Jewish wife, and was forced to retire from teaching in 1937. In 1938 he fell under a publication ban as well. Many of his long-time friends stood by him, however, and he was able to continue his studies and research without being totally isolated. But he and his wife were under constant threat of removal to a concentration camp until March 30, 1945, when Heidelberg was liberated by American troops.
In 1948 Jaspers moved to the University of Basel in Switzerland. He remained prominent in the philosophical community until his death in Basel in 1969.
Contributions to Psychiatry
Jaspers considered primary delusions as ultimately ‘un-understandable,’ as he believed no coherent reasoning process existed behind their formation. This view has caused some controversy, and the likes of R. D. Laing and Richard Bentall (1999, p. 133-135) have criticised it, stressing that taking this stance can lead therapists into the complacency of assuming that because they do not understand a patient, the patient is deluded and further investigation on the part of the therapist will have no effect. Huub Engels (2009) argues that schizophrenic speech disorder may be understandable as Emil Kraepelin’s dream speech is understandable.

"Ich für meine Person empfinde die Nothwendigkeit der Erfindung der Zukunft nicht und kann davon überhaupt reden vielleicht nur, weil ich in unbegreiflicher Weise die Empfindung, in der Zukunft meine Heimath zu haben, mit der Unfähigkeit verbinde ihr Prophet zu sein."
So schrieb in seinen erst 1941 zum ersten Mal veröffentlichten "Selbstbekenntnissen" Franz Overbeck, Professor der Kirchengeschichte und Theologie an der Universität Basel. Von Fachkollegen wurde er jahrzehntelang mit verlegenem Stillschweigen übergangen und wenn man ihn schon überhaupt wahrnahm, dann meist höchstens als "Nietzsches Freund" – eben so, "Nietzsche und der Freund" hat seinerzeit seinen ihm gewidmeten Essay Stephan Zweig betitelt. Man erkannte hie und da seine "eigene eigentümliche geistige Leistung" an, diese sicherte ihm aber lediglich eine "Stelle in der Welt Nietzsches" (Jaspers). Zwar gab es schon immer Leute, die in ihm einen originellen und selbständien Denker sehen wollten – wie etwa Walter Nigg, Karl Löwith oder neuerdings Hans Blumenberg – sie vermochten jedoch nicht das im allgemeinen Bewußtsein sehr suggestiv geprägte Bild von "Nietzsches Sinclair" (Walter Benjamin), der nicht einmal fähig war, die Größe des genialen Freundes vollkommen zu begreifen, durch ein neues – der Wirklichkeit näheres – zu ersetzen. Und doch hat Overbeck recht bekommen: seit etwa zwanzig Jahren nimmt das Interesse an seinem Werk und seiner Person sichtlich zu, es erscheinen immer neue Bücher und unzählige Artikel über ihn und der Stuttgarter Metzler-Verlag gibt eine neunbändige Edition seiner Schriften heraus, die allerdings nur einen Bruchteil seines gesamten Nachlaßes umfassen soll.

Nietzsches Freundschaftskult
Nietzsche beginnt schon früh eine Art Freundschaftskult zu entwickeln. Grundlage der Freundschaften sind dabei immer ähnliche geistige Interessen oder Ideale (die institutionalisierte Freundschaft, die Studentenverbindung Franconia, verläßt Nietzsche bald, weil hier eben nur oberflächlich Zeit totgeschlagen wird). Seine beiden ersten Freunde sind Wilhelm Pinder und Gustav Krug. Rückblickend schreibt Nietzsche über seine beiden ersten Freunde: "Ja, es ist etwas Hohes, Edles, wahre Freunde zu haben und unser Leben ist von Gott bedeutend verschönert worden, daß er uns Mitgefährten gab, die mit uns dem Ziele zustreben. Und besonders ich muß Gott im Himmel dafür loben, da mir ohne diese in Naumburg vielleicht nie heimisch geworden wäre". Gemeinsam mit seinen Freunden besucht Friedrich Nietzsche die Knabenbürgerschule (ab Ostern 1850) am Topfmarkt direkt an der Wenzelskirche.

"Semper nostra manet amicitia" – "Immer währet unsere Freundschaft", so enden viele Briefe, die Nietzsche aus Pforta an seine beiden Freunde schreibt. Wie sehr gerade die Kunst das entscheidende Motiv dieses Freundschaftsbundes ist, zeigt die Gründung des künstlerisch-literarischen Vereins ‘Germania’, den die drei Freunde anläßlich einer Wanderung zur Schönburg in den Sommerferien am 25. Juli 1860 ins Leben rufen. Eine gemeinsame Kasse zum Erwerb ausgewählter Literatur wird eingerichtet, daneben verpflichten sich die drei Freunde regelmäßig selbstgeschaffene Werke auszutauschen und sich gegenseitig anzuregen und aufrichtig zu kritisieren. Nietzsche würdigt diesen Bund später mit den Worten: "Wir beschlossen damals eine kleine Vereinigung von wenigen Kameraden zu stiften, mit der Absicht, für unsere produktiven Neigungen in Kunst und Literatur eine feste und verpflichtende Organisation zu finden" (‘Über die Zukunft der Bildungsanstalten, 1. Vortrag’). Nietzsche verdankt der ‘Germania’, vielmehr Gustav Krug, die intensive Beschäftigung mit Richard Wagner. Schon bei der Gründung der ‘Germania’ wurde beschlossen, die `Zeitschrift für Musik´, die für Richard Wagner und seine Musik eintrat, zu abonnieren. Im März 1861 hält Gustav Krug einen Vortrag über ‘einige Szenen von Tristan und Isolde’ und spielt in den Osterferien aus den Klavierauszügen vor. Nietzsche beschäftigt sich nicht nur als Komponist mit der Musik, sondern begleitet sein eigenes Schaffen mit theoretischen Überlegungen ‘Über das Wesen der Musik’. Der zunächst rege geistige Austausch unter den Freunden erlahmt jedoch schon bald, einzig Nietzsche liefert bis zur Auflösung der ‘Germania’ 1863 regelmäßig seine Aufsätze, Gedichte und Kompositionen. Grund der Auflösung ist ganz bestimmt der rigorose und spöttisch-hochmütige Umgang Nietzsches mit den Werken seiner Freunde. Nietzsche läßt besonders an den Gedichten Wilhelm Pinders kein gutes Haar. Über ein ‘Prometheus’ Gedicht heißt es vernichtend: "Was diese wahrhaft babylonische Begriffsverwirrung für Gedanken im Hintergrund hat, ist mir ein Rätsel, wie der Sinn des folgenden Gedichts."

Im Herbst 1859 schließlich lernt Nietzsche den Pastorensohn Paul Deussen kennen, kurze Zeit später auch Carl von Gersdorff. Mit Deussen beginnt die Freundschaft, weil beide eine Vorliebe für den griechischen Dichter Anekreon teilen. Mit ihm wird Nietzsche 1861 konfirmiert. Gersdorff und Nietzsche werden Freunde über die Liebe zur Musik. Nietzsche hat in Pforta die Gelegenheit, Klavier zu spielen, er singt seit August 1859 im Chor und komponiert. Die Freundschaft mit dem künstlerisch begabten, jedoch den Lehrern gegenüber aufsässigen Guido Meyer endet 1863 mit der Relegation seines Freundes. Nietzsche nennt diesen Tag den Traurigsten, den er in Pforta verlebt hat. Auch Nietzsche hat eine kurze renitente Pubertätsphase. Überliefert ist, daß Friedrich Nietzsches im April 1863 mit dem genannten Guido Mayer von der Bahnhofsgaststätte in Bad Kösen betrunken nach Pforta zurückkehrten. Eine Karzerstrafe in Folge spöttischer Formulierungen in einem Aufsichtsprotokoll ist zudem aktenkundig.

Johannes Overbeck
Der Neue Overbeck Kommentierte Neuedition der griechischen und lateinischen Schriftquellen zur antiken Bildhauerei und Malerei
Johannes Overbeck (1826–1895, s. Abb.) hat in seinem 1868 in Leipzig erschienenen Buch "Die antiken Schriftquellen zur Geschichte der bildenden Künste bei den Griechen" insgesamt 2500 literarische und epigraphische Quellen zusammengestellt. Die zwischen dem 8. Jh. v. Chr. und dem 12. Jh. n. Chr. abgefassten Schriftzeugnisse nehmen Bezug auf Statuen und Gemälde von der archaischen Zeit bis zur Spätantike und bilden zusammen mit den erhaltenen Monumenten die Grundlage unserer Kenntnis der antiken Bildhauerei und Malerei.
Ziel des von der DFG finanzierten und in interdisziplinärer Kooperation zwischen den Instituten für Klassische Philologie und Klassische Archäologie der Freien Universität Berlin durchgeführten Projekts ist die Ersetzung dieses Standardwerks, das seit seinem Erscheinen ein unentbehrliches Arbeitsbuch für alle altertumswissenschaftlichen Fächer und deren Nachbardisziplinen darstellt.
Johannes Adolph Overbeck (* 27. März 1826 in Antwerpen; † 8. November 1895 in Leipzig) war ein deutscher Archäologe. 1845 begann Overbeck sein Studium an der Universität Bonn, das er 1848 mit der Promotion zum Dr. phil. abschloss. 1850 erfolgte seine Habilitation in Bonn. Seit 1863 war Overbeck als Professor der Archäologie und Vorstand der archäologischen Sammlung an der Universität Leipzig tätig. Sein Ziel war die "Herstellung einer möglichst vollständigen Reihenfolge kunstgeschichtlich charakteristischer, namentlich aber datierbarer Monumente" in Abgüssen. Er baute binnen weniger Jahrzehnte ein repräsentatives, am Ende des Jahrhunderts auf rund achthundertfünfzig Inventarnummern angewachsenes Abgussmuseum auf, das über die Landesgrenzen hinaus Anerkennung genoss. Overbeck ist der Hauptvertreter der kunstmythologischen Schule der Archäologie.

Nietzsche war kein im eigentlichen Sinne großer Mensch. Kein einziges seiner Talente, so reich begabt er war, sicherte ihm auch an sich die Größe. Es sei denn das ungewöhnlichste dieser Talente, die Gabe der Seelenanalyse, die ihm denn auch selbst, da er sie vornehmlich an sich übte, so tödlich gefährlich wurde und ihn „entseelte“, lange ehe er starb. Selbst die Willensstärke war bei ihm nicht zu den exzessiven Dimensionen entwickelt, welche das Grunderfordernis natürlicher menschlicher Größe ist … (Seite 209)
Gerade in diesem Stück waren aber Nietzsche und ich Antipoden; er hat es bis zum Extravaganten auf sich gehalten, ich habe es mit mir stets entgegengesetzt getan, und eben damit denke ich am allerwenigsten mich moralisch über ihn zu erheben. (Seite 211)
… Sein Wahnsinn, dessen Ausbruch niemand aus gleicher Nähe wie ich erlebt hat, ist, meiner ursrpünglichen Überzeugung nach, eine ihn blitzartig treffende Katastrophe gewesen. Sie ist zwischen dem Weihnachtsabend 1888 und dem Epiphaniastage 1889 eingetreten. Vorher kann Nietzsche, sein Zustand mag ein noch so exaltierter gewesen sein, nicht wahnsinnig gewesen sein. Dennoch will ich nichts weniger als eine besondere Zuversicht zu meinem Urteil ausdrücken. Es ist bisweilen selbst zeitweilig schwankend geworden, sofern ich, und zwar in verschiedenen von mir beobachteten Perioden der geistigen Erkrankung Nietzsches, mich, wenigstens für Augenblicke, der grauenvollen Vorstellung nicht habe erwehren können, daß sie simuliert sei. Ein Eindruck, der sich ganz nur erklärt aus den Erfahrungen, die ich überhaupt mit den Selbstmaskierungen Nietzsches gemacht habe. Doch auch hier habe ich mich schließlich vor den alles eigene Denken und Spekulieren niederschlagenden Tatsachen gebeugt.
Manche geistige Extravaganz Nietzsches, z.B. bei dem brennenden Ehrgeiz, der ihn von Natur beseelte, die Exzesse seines Selbstbewußtseins in seinen letzten Jahren, erklären sich so für mich viel besser, als mit dem Wahnsinn, auf den sie sich für andere oft zurückführen mögen. Auf jeden Fall sollte der Eindruck des Nietzsches Wahnsinns, der auf viele Leute so groß ist, mindestens durch die großartige Unbefanngenheit hindurch angeschaut werden, mit der er bei seinen Abenteuern als Denker die ganze Vorstellung handhabt und verwendet. Mit entsprechender Unbefanngenheit verhielt er sich in Beziehung auf sie im gemeinen Leben und in Rücksicht auf sich. Namentlich die ihn wenigstens in den früheren Jahren unseres Verkehrs manchmal bewegende Vorstellung vom in Hinsicht auf seine Herkunft höchst problematischen Wahnsinn seines Vaters handhabte er stets mit einem gewissen sorglosen Leichtsinn. Er konnte sich ernstlich, ja schrecklich mit Gedanken darüber quälen, ob ihm etwas Besonderes zu leisten übehaupt beschieden sei, nie ist er mir durch den Gedanken verdüstert vorgekommen, daß er vom Wahnsinn besonders bedroht sei. Und mir erscheint es auch ganz möglich, daß das gar nicht der Fall, sondern daß sein Wahnsinn ein Erzeugnis seiner Lebensweise ist und von ihm nicht ins Leben mitgebracht gewesen ist, sondern daß er ihn sich selbst zugelebt hat … (Seite 214/215)
─ Nietzsche ist ein herzlicher Gegner des Antisemitismus, wie er ihn erlebt hat, gewesen; sah er doch „Verläumdungs- und Vernichtungswut“ für eine der „unehrlichsten Formen des Hasses“ an. (Wille zur Macht. 125.) Das hindert nicht, daß, wo er ehrlich spricht, seine Urteile über die Juden allen Antisemitismus an Schärfe weit hinter sich lassen. …Die Freundschaft mit Rohde hat Nietzsche so zu nennende Liebesschmerzen bereitet. Die Freundschaft mit mir höchstens eingebildete Schmerzen, Schmerzen, die einen Grund nur in Einbildungen Nietzsches hatten, z.B. das ihm sein Argwohn etwa bereitet, ich hätte ihn um Rohdes Freundschaft gebracht. Zwar redet Nietzsche manchmal selbst von sich, als ob Freundschaft mit ihm unmöglich ist. … Eigene Gedanken habe ich aber hier über meine Freundschaft mit Nietzsche. Ich weiß keine andere Bezeichnung für unser Verhältnis, und würde mich für verrückt halten, wenn ich dabei durch den Gedanken an die Beziehung zwischen Meister und Schüler nur im entferntesten beirrt würde. Dagegen fragt sich um die Bedeutung des Altersverhältnisses in dieser ganzen Frage willen: war ich nicht, um noch Nietzsches Freund zu werden, zu alt im Verhältnis zu ihm, so alt, daß mir dies noch zu werden im Grunde schon verboten war, in welchem Falle meine Freundschaft für ihn nur ein Symptom meiner allzu langsamen Reifwerdung wäre, einer sich über Gebühr erhaltenden Impressionabilität.
Ich war, als ich Nietzsche kennenlernte 33 Jahre alt, 7 Jahre älter als er. Das ließ kaum noch das Zustandekommen zwischen uns erwarten; ganz anderer Art waren, schon der Altersverhältnisse wegen, seine Freundschaften mit Gersdorff und Rohde. Dennoch kam es dazu. Vieles, was uns zusammenrückte, lag doch in den Umständen, unter denen wir uns zuerst im Jahre 1870 trafen. (S. 320)

Franz Camille Overbeck (* 16. November 1837 in Sankt Petersburg; † 26. Juni 1905 in Basel) war Kirchenhistoriker und Professor für evangelische Theologie. Er publizierte nur wenig und blieb mit seinen kritischen Gedanken zur Theologie in der Fachwelt ein Außenseiter. Bekannt ist er vor allem als Freund und Briefpartner Friedrich Nietzsches.
… In 1870, Overbeck became professor of New Testament Exegesis and Old Church History at the University of Basel. From that time until 1875, he lived in the same house, one floor under, his colleague Friedrich Nietzsche. During this time, the housemates developed a friendship that would remain crucial for each other.
In 1873, Overbeck published his most important work ‘How Christian is Our Present-Day Theology?’ (‘Über die Christlichkeit unserer heutigen Theologie’), in which he argued that the ‘historical’ Christianity, as developed by the fathers of the church, neither did nor could have to do with the original ideas of Christ. He observed that early Christianity had opposed itself to every type of history, culture, and science, which made a ‘Christian theology’ impossible. In this work, Overbeck criticized the conservative (‘apologetic’) theology, which stuck dogmatically to doctrines, as much as the ‘liberal’ theology, which asserted that belief and knowledge could be reconciled. According to Overbeck, both failed to capture an essence of Christianity, which excludes every type of scientific knowledge.
Upton Sinclair (September 20, 1878 – November 25, 1968) He achieved popularity in the first half of the 20th century, acquiring particular fame for his 1906 muckraking novel The Jungle. It exposed conditions in the U.S. meat packing industry, causing a public uproar that contributed in part to the passage a few months later of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. Time magazine called him "a man with every gift except humor and silence."

Gibt es ein (rationales oder emotionales) Fundament der Moral (als Wissenschaft) sowie des moralischen Handelns? Sind ‚gut‘ und ‚böse‘ in ihrer Geltung ausweisbare Kategorien? Oder drückt sich in den herrschenden Moralvorstellungen und den gängigen philosophischen Ethiken ein „Wille zur Macht“ aus, so dass es Aufgabe einer radikalen philosophischen Aufklärung wäre, jene Gebilde als ideologische Machtinstrumente zu entlarven?
Die moralphilosophischen und moralkritischen Überlegungen Schopenhauers und Nietzsches können zum einen als strategische Entlarvungsversuche einer verbrämt theologischen Moral gelesen werden, die in der kantischen Ethik der reinen praktischen Vernunft ihren sublimsten Ausdruck gefunden hat. Zum anderen können sie als zwei philosophische Unternehmungen verstanden werden, die jeweils sehr verschiedene Konsequenzen aus dem ‚Tod Gottes‘ ziehen: Während Schopenhauer auf das Urphänomen des Mitleids als Quelle echter Moralität verweist, propagiert Nietzsche letztlich die „Umwertung aller Werte“.

NYC – East Village: Tompkins Square Park – Temperance Fountain

Dating to 1888, this neo-classical fountain was the gift of the wealthy San Francisco dentist, businessman, and temperance crusader Henry D. Cogswell (1820–1900).

The erection of the Temperance Fountain in Tompkins Square Park resulted from Cogswell’s affiliation with the Moderation Society, which was formed in 1877 to address health conditions on the Lower East Side, and to distribute free ice-water fountains to encourage citizens to drink water instead of alcoholic beverages. Cogswell served as the group’s honorary president in 1890, and the collaboration produced another temperance fountain at the New York City main post office at 34th Street and Eighth Avenue. The figure of Hebe, the mythical water carrier, atop the pyramidal stone pediment was originally fabricated in zinc by the J. L. Mott Iron Works in Mott Haven in the Bronx. The classically-styled figure is based on a marble statue made circa 1816 by the renowned Danish sculptor Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (c.1770–1844). Thorvaldsen’s 1839 marble self-portrait stands in Central Park at East 97th Street. Though the four ornamental luminaires with red, white and blue tinted glass, which once flanked the fountain, long ago vanished, this monument has withstood the vagaries of time better than most. In 1992, the fountain underwent extensive restoration, and the Hebe statue was replaced with a more durable bronze replica.

Cogswell was born in Tolland, Connecticut in 1820, the son of an architect and builder. His mother died when he was young, and the family relocated to Orwell, New York. At age nine Cogswell returned alone to Connecticut, and endured “eight years of labor in southern Connecticut and Rhode Island cotton mills, itinerant wanderings, and incarceration in a poorhouse." Managing to transcend these ordeals, and largely self-taught, Cogswell served as principal of Orwell High School, studied medicine, and became a dentist.

News of the California Gold Rush of 1849 lured Cogswell to San Francisco. There his prosperous dental practice and real estate investments permitted him to retire in 1856 with a fortune estimated at ,000,000. He engaged himself in public philanthropy, founding the Cogswell Polytechnic Institute, and helping to advance the anti-alcohol or “temperance” movement. Often, his charitable acts were tinged with self-promotion, and in an effort to embellish his humble origins, he adopted the coat of arms of Humphrey Cogswell, a 15th-century English lord, from whom Henry falsely claimed his lineage.

Cogswell’s most lasting legacy was the 50 monuments he sponsored nationwide between 1878 and the 1890s. Most were versions of the temperance fountain. Several of the fountains, such as those in Washington, D. C. Boston Common, and in Tompkins Square Park, were covered by a stone canopy or baldachin supported by four Doric columns. As can be seen here, the four stone entablatures were emblazoned with the words Faith, Hope, Charity, and Temperance.
